Brighton Conference a success for WLD

September 28, 2007 1:40 PM

The Brighton Conference was a brilliant success for WLD...

...Our 'Women in Prisons' motion was passed almost unanimously, and with wholehearted support from the party. Debbie Enever, WLD Vice-Chair proposed the motion with Juliet Lyon, director of the Prison Reform Trust, summating for us.

...Our amendment to the 'Freedom from poverty, opportunity for all' policy, which extended the right to request flexible working to all was also almost unanimously passed - with only one objection! Lorely Burt MP proposed this amendment, with Susan Kramer MP summating.

...WLD's fringe event, 'Let's Talk About Sex' was a huge success - even appearing as 'Fringe of the Day' in the Independent newspaper! Penny Barber from Brook in Birmingham spoke expertly on sexual health services for young people, Miranda Whitehead, WLD Vice-Chair and retired GP spoke about sexual health in older people, and Evan Harris MP discussed the importance of sensible legislation and provision of services.

...Our Patsy Calton Award was presented on the main stage by Simon Hughes on the Wednesday of conference. We also held our reception for the nominees in conjunction with ALDC, celebrating 100 years of women in local government.

...The Patsy Calton Award will be back next year so if you know of any exceptional and inspirational women then do make sure you nominate them. More details to come.
