The BBC and Abuse in Welsh care homes

November 20, 2012 11:00 AM

In light of the news that BBC Director-General George Entwistle has resigned Dr. Miranda Whitehead, WLD Chair, has said:

"We are concerned that the failings of the BBC will obscure the real horror of abuse of children in state care. It is important that the real issue of the exploitation of these children remains the centre of this story"

Although it is clearly a very serious issue that the BBC (known for its impartiality and thorough journalism) has been shown to broadcast false allegations, this offence is by no means as serious as that of systematic child abuse occurring over many years in state run homes, places where children should expect to be completely safe.

Women Liberal Democrats would encourage the government to ensure that these reviews are more comprehensive than the Waterhouse inquiry and praise the choice of Mrs Justice Julia Macur to re-examine the original findings.
